Once vilified as the root of disease, microbes are now emerging as indispensable allies—extending our genetic capabilities and bestowing us with powers once thought beyond human.
As a scientist who began learning about "biology" in the 1970s, what you so eloquently describe is magical to me. But, not because I don't believe what you're saying, but rather because I DO. It dramatically expands and enlivens our understanding of biology and demonstrates the interconnectivity of all life on this beautiful Earth - and that we needn't waste our energy fearing all other life forms. The old biology concepts we have been taught for so long have been more "rote" than enlivened; this new research shows biology to be far beyond those old beliefs. I see parallels to this new biology in how some still view the Universe - as "dead" (i.e., inanimate) rather than living, evolving, intelligent, just like our own bodies/biology. I view both re-interpretations as simply uncovering the Magic within us and around us. Imagine the sparks of curiosity and awe that budding biologists and astronomers would feel if they read about such Magic in textbooks! They could not help but become more enlightened and outstanding scientists - and human beings. Namaste
This must be divine providence. I am attending a webinar right now that is presented by a naturopathic doctor on the "microbiome" and none of this is mentioned. Not a single word.
I checked my email because I was getting bored, and this popped up.
This article is more interesting than the seminar.
As you mention, "survival of the fittest" is no longer the best theory to understand evolution. It only tells part of the story as we can see with the new advances demonstrating incredibly complex and mutually beneficial interrelationships among species. The germ theory, vaccines and blind materialism fall short in the face of this reality. A deeper understanding is emerging that shows us how utterly interconnected we are to the entire biosphere, and how this shows us that we are not the masters we thought we were, but part of it all, and our role needs to reconsidered in order to survive.
Thank you for the "germ and terrain symbiotic vision of humans." I would define it as competition for energy, and our symbionts could become our parasites and pathogens if we are weak, our immune system is dysfunctional, and we allow them to take advantage of us.
