I believe it's also been pointed out that back in the pre-vaccine days (which would include 1962), measles wasn't a reportable disease, and often kids with measles didn't even see a doctor. So while the measles deaths as a percentage of *total* deaths might be correct, the case fatality rate actually may have been much lower.
Also worth noting that our family doctor, back when I had measles in 1960, knew enough to tell my mother to give me vitamin A!

No one in our neighborhood had a doctor visit for measles chicken pox or mumps.
