A claim that one’s actions does good is only that, whether made by a person or an institution. The AAP is a trade and industry organization, serving the interests of its industry funders and industry player members. The overwhelming majority of physicians now practice as cogs in an industry, subject to standards, assumptions, practices, and norms which emanate from and circle back around to serve the industry.

Many people, when they seek out a doctor, do not want to consider that they are interacting with the retail face of an industry with lobbyists, PR people, investors, astroturf groups, managers and tradesmen They want to feel that they are interacting only with the equivalent of a priest, activated by divine knowledge and commitment to selfless service. They want to have faith.

But the majority of physicians, however individually well-intentioned are currently trapped in an industrial machine, and their choices and decisions, and imparted “wisdom” reflects this.

The public would not blink if an administration withdrew funding from an American Academy of Petroleum Professionals. In fact, they might be irritated that taxpayer money was ever spent in this manner. But misplaced faith that the practice of medicine remains a “calling” and a “public service”, allows it to be chump-rolled.
