Thanks for this extraordinary article on melanin! So much was covered and questions answered.

Plant life is extraordinary, recalling how algae growing in the holding tanks of highly radioactive water present at Three Mile Island being monitored by scientists found algae with the highest concentration of SOD protecting the algae from damage.

Melanin in organs and mushrooms and social implications in society all interrelated with the cosmos. Love it!

Incredible piece of work and gentle summary and introduction for me to this topic. Thank you very much for sharing not just data and history but wisdom and kindness.

Forget mentioning evolution. It’s a fairy tale for people who don’t want to be held accountable by God. Melanin is ONE MORE PIECE OF EVIDENCE that life is FAR TOO COMPLEX TO HAVE EVOLVED. It required an intelligence which is infinite in scope, to DESIGN living things, including the complex role of melanin in the body. You discredit yourself by throwing evolution into the mix. Evolution is the anti-scientific claim that NOTHING produced EVERYTHING. Your description of melanin not only does not require mentioning evolution, but it detracts.

Sayer Ji's avatar

The beauty of the melanin discovery is that it transcends the tired evolution-vs-creation debate by revealing something far more extraordinary: life appears to be fundamentally integrated with the cosmos at the quantum level. Whether you see this as evidence of God's handiwork or nature's intelligence, we're both marveling at the same miracle—that a simple pigment turns out to be a sophisticated biotechnology linking us directly to light itself.

Rather than detracting from the wonder, examining how this system developed (whether through divine action, conscious evolution, or guided development) only deepens our appreciation. After all, discovering that we're literally powered by light—that we carry within us the ability to transform cosmic radiation into life force—sounds more like scripture than textbook science. Perhaps that's exactly the point: the closer we look at life's mechanisms, the more they reveal depths that purely materialistic explanations cannot fathom.

Thank you for highlighting how this discovery points toward something greater than conventional scientific materialism can explain. That's precisely why this research is so revolutionary.

Dear Desert Nomad,

I believe in the Lord and I believe in Creation. Such does not eliminate the obvious truth of evolution. Evolution is part of Creation and is there for us to see. I suppose I should not argue the point because creationists can be such rockheads that there is no point in trying. Where Creation leaves off and evolution begins, no one knows. But evolution is real.

Desert Nomad's avatar

So sorry to read you have fallen for the fairy tale. I have studied this deeply for decades. Evolution in the Darwinian sense is nonsense. God created everything in six ordinary earth rotation days, and the evidence supports this. You cannot believe in the Lord and reject what He plainly told us about what He did. He was the only eyewitness. I base my views on my extensive research of the empirical evidence. You need to do some serious study. I wish I had the time and space to explain in detail but I do not. But until you have examined the evidence with an open mind, you are in no position to make such an assertion.

Ken's avatar

Like I said. Rockheads

Desert Nomad's avatar

Rocks are solid and reliable. I am fine. Much better than a mushhead. Being blue-pilled. Since you refuse to look at the evidence, I can only conclude that it's a case of one finger pointing at me, three fingers back at yourself. Until you have actually done your homework, you are not qualified to pass judgment on me.

Everything evolves. A narrow definition of evolution can be misleading. Obviously the universe is intelligent and being part of it witness what we are able of its infinite scope. The one rule that holds consistent is that karma exists.

Michael LeVesque's avatar

Life does evolve and does so continuously. Too narrow a definition of evolution can make it appear as a detraction. Obviously, supreme intelligence is inherent in the system. We are part of it and able to appreciate its dynamic. It has built within the role of karma which holds everything accountable.

Desert Nomad's avatar

We reap what we sow. You can call that karma if you want, but it happens within one lifetime, not two, dozens, or millions. The universe is not intelligent, but the Creator Who made the universe has infinite intelligence. There is no evidence that evolution in the Darwinian sense ever took place. If you really examine the evidence, life is losing ground. DNA has more and more errors over time, leading to shorter and more painful lives for creatures.

Michael LeVesque's avatar

You are basing your premise on the historical book of Genesis of the Torah or also considered the First book of the Old Testament. It also states that the sins of the Father are visited upon the Son and for several generations. God as creator of the Universe means that the Universe must be intelligent since God created Humanity as intelligent. We are part and parcel of the Universe otherwise nothing could exist within it.

Sayer is acknowledging the great "I am" in scientific terms that illustrate the magnificence and unbounded complexity, beauty and creativity of Creation within the Universe. This should do nothing more than increase our spiritual connection.

Not to be argumentative, however, one should read carefully Genesis and recognize that there are within it two versions of creation, two versions of the creation of man and woman as well.

You are correct life is losing ground as the environment is losing ground as wealth blindly destroys the environment for all creatures and plants. That is where the struggle is taking place, and biologically our DNA is in constant change as the RNA tries to overcome the stresses and fear of the present. Meanwhile we must fight for survival and health.

Desert Nomad's avatar

This is the kind of message I can discuss well. Thank you.

We human beings are intelligent, but we are not the universe. The universe consists of galaxies, stars, nebulae, planets, satellites, comets, asteroids, etc.etc. Human beings are a tiny percent of the mass of one planet. Thus our presence does not make the universe intelligent.

Sayer Ji's comment to me indicates he believes the physical phenomena he describes are so wonderful they transcend the theory of evolution. To me this is an indication that there is no point in mentioning evolution at all, since it only detracts from the wonder. This seals the case for me.

The two different descriptions of creation are two different perspectives to emphasize two different aspects of creation. They do not contradict each other in any way.

As you have agreed that our DNA is deteriorating, it should be noted the only reasonable explanation I have ever seen for how evolution happens is mutations. However, 99% of mutations are harmful or deadly. It's more than one step forward two steps back. The conditions created by intelligent beings in the Miller-Urey experiment could not have existed in nature; they are unstable, and they destroy what they create. Muller and Urey had to remove the amino acids from the environment quickly to prevent their destruction. There is no mechanism for creating life out of non-living matter. Without this, evolution is dead in the water.

Michael LeVesque's avatar

Good, we have a discussion.

First, a question are you part of the universe?

Second, when does life emerge? or Does it converge because the spirit is waiting to engage?

The creation story has one based on ancient texts for the people to recognize their obligation to the Almighty's creation with a day of rest and worship. And to explain in simple terms the presence of the complexity of life on Earth. Many cultures have similar stories and some with interesting variations.

The other story is expansive and can include the world of science and physics. It recognizes the Word which is vibration, which are waves which are enhanced by light and its absence. The Universe is held together by electromagnetic waves that impact all life and the essence of health or its destruction. From this we are created and molded by the supreme intelligence of the Almighty. We are much more than all the biological factors that go into our being, we are miracles.

What is disparaging is that we have a constant struggle between our biological essence and spiritual creation. This is a challenge and to forego compassion and kindness for greed and hubris places us in a dangerous world of orthodoxy ignoring gnosticism.

It seems that intelligence for you is more strict and not to be equated with non-living matter such as stars or perhaps even with bacteria or organelles within the cell.

My definition is the inclusion of any particle within the meaning of its presence and function within the system without which the system would fail. Such as without mitochondria we would not live or be here. So every part has a place to play but can only do so in the total environment and that requires intelligent placement and function. That environment must be part of the intelligent system to figure that out. Therefore there must be an overlaying Supreme intelligence at work making that happen.

This brings me back sixty years to my epistemology courses where the argument was endless. So sometimes a simple explanation allows us to move on. And science is always surprised when something very complex ends up having a simpler explanation. So be it.

Desert Nomad's avatar

Lots of ideas here. Maybe I should start by saying that epistemology consists of all the different philosophies some people came up with, combined. Would you include God's wisdom in that? And why would the musings of limited humans with limited understanding be the way you determine your personal Weltanschauung?

Am I part of the universe? I don't really know how to answer that question. My body is made of matter which is part of the universe. Let me skip ahead on the question of the universe being intelligent by noting that my personal belief is that what we call the physical laws (the laws of thermodynamics, for instance) are really not laws at all, but God's continuous action to uphold and maintain the order of the universe. The Bible says He knows the number of hairs on our heads. And that is constantly changing. We humans really have no grasp of what it is like to be infinite intelligence. We can only describe it in simple terms. God's Word is not vibration. Vibration is a part of the universe, and God is not part of the universe. He is only present in the universe.

Science is tentative. The scientific method involves forming a hypothesis, devising experiments to test it, and if the experiments support the hypothesis, then other scientists have to be able to replicate your results. If these do not support the hypothesis, you change the hypothesis and try again. This makes science tentative. The Bible claims to be God's word and without error (in the original autographs). We cannot test this directly, but we can test other things ABOUT the Bible. Does archaeology support the cities claimed in the Bible? Are the copies we have reliable? When were the copies made? How many of them? How does this compare to any other ancient writing? The Bible comes out orders of magnitude ahead of any other writings of the time.

Agreed: we are miracles.

The universe is flawed. This is the reason for our struggle. The Bible gives us a reason the universe is flawed. I do not see Gnosticism as offering any solutions. Orthodoxy means adhering to the truths that have been demonstrated.

Intelligence I equate with sapience. There are different characteristics of sapience. The ability to speak and understand language. Creativity. The ability to appreciate and produce beauty. The ability to design and use complex tools. And so forth. The universe of galaxies, stars, etc. lacks all these characteristics. I take this as a scientific definition, good until something better comes along. Your definition seems subjective. And mitochondria are not the only things we require to be alive. They're just the source of biological energy that allows us to function. If God sustains the universe nanosecond by nanosecond, He is the intelligence of the universe.

This is a fascinating and well written exposition of the science supporting the role of melanin as direct energy harvester and transducer. The only disagreement I have is the references to the theory of evolution, which remains but a theory, not a proven fact, as implied by the author.

Travis Ogle's avatar

Amen to that, Mark. The science of my childhood spoke of the Theory of Evolution and I see no documented evidence that justifies elevating it to the unchallenged level of Fact.

Desert Nomad's avatar

More than that, evolution is false, and citing it detracts from the article and its truthfulness. I offered a more detailed explanation in a separate comment above. Thank you for speaking out. It is always helpful to know I am not alone.

Thank you for this article Sayer. I’ve read it with a smile on my face as a week ago I listened to an interview with Dr Roger Seiheult where he was presenting the case foe sun exposure and water for helping with cancer - https://youtu.be/wQJlGHVmdrA?si=HJaHNNi9wPqj3ZnL

I have now read your article which clicked everything into place, brilliant piece. I then started thinking a) why is exposure to the sun demonised and the use of sunscreens pushed constantly, b) why would the USA and other countries spread particulates (that become toxins) into the sky to reduce sunlight, c) why contaminate water with chemicals and fluoride when it’s so important to humans - my answer is they do not want fit healthy humans who want to work together whatever their race or skin colour. As we know the light is the place to be!

This is fascinating, and a revolution in the way we understand our energy metabolism. It helps to explain the observations and anomalies that don’t add up with the currently held theories.

I’m in awe at the intricate and complex workings of our bodies, our minds, and the mechanisms we just take for granted.

It’s miraculous. We are so much more than we thought.

Great article, fascinating subject, well presented. Been following your work for about a decade and always look forward to your generous input. However I find it mystifying that a person as thoughtful and spiritual as you are reject intelligent design preferring mindless chaotic evolution as your paradigm for understanding creation. Through my eyes it's impossible not to see the strand of creative genius from one mind that is apparent in all of creation. It is so plain it's as if the creator left calling cards everywhere in everything.

Travis Ogle's avatar

Mind blowing, but it does feel right. God’s creation never disappoints. When you think you have a handle on things, up pops a new way of looking at the total picture and you start all over again. What a journey!

Athletic superiority that seems to favor dark skinned people may be a function of the role of melanin. You dig deeper and find out why. I’ve frequently heard that plants grow better when the gardener encourages them and even talks to them. I wonder if the shared melanin, in the plants seed and in our brain can somehow provide a link for communication and awareness.

I especially liked your reference to the challenging conversations you shared with your father. Science would not be beneficial without such interplay. Totally fascinating! Thank you for your faith and wisdom.

Regarding restructured water, could this be a key to water absorption, hydration, and cellular health? Also, wondering how melanin could be enhanced within the human body to promote overall health?

Sayer Ji's avatar

Greetings Russel! Yes—restructured water appears to be fundamental to water absorption, hydration, and cellular health. The article highlights Dr. Gerald Pollack's discovery of EZ (Exclusion Zone) water, which forms a structured, negatively charged phase that acts like a biological battery. This fourth phase of water expands dramatically under light exposure, suggesting that melanin's interaction with water goes beyond simple chemistry to actually restructuring water at the molecular level.

Since water comprises 99% of all molecules in our body by number, even small improvements in water structuring could have profound effects on cellular function. The article suggests that melanin may work synergistically with EZ water formation—melanin captures electromagnetic energy and uses it to split and restructure water molecules, creating a more organized, energetically favorable state that cells can utilize more efficiently. This could explain why melanin-rich cells can function with 83% fewer mitochondria yet maintain normal growth and development.

Regarding enhancing melanin function for health, the article points to several promising approaches:

Light exposure: Since melanin responds to the entire electromagnetic spectrum, regular exposure to natural sunlight (especially at dawn and dusk when red/near-infrared wavelengths dominate) could optimize melanin's energy-harvesting capabilities.

Melanin precursors: The article mentions Dr. Solís-Herrera's compound QIAPI-1, a melanin precursor that improved visual function in patients with retinal diseases by potentially boosting melanin content.

Targeted light therapy: Devices emitting specific wavelengths tuned to melanin's absorption spectrum could enhance its bioenergetic function, particularly for neurological and retinal conditions.

Dietary considerations: While not explicitly mentioned, the article's discussion of chlorophyll metabolites accumulating in mitochondria suggests that consuming chlorophyll-rich foods might support our light-harvesting capabilities.

The key insight is that melanin appears to be a dynamic, functional biomolecule that can be influenced and potentially optimized, not just a static pigment. By understanding melanin as part of a light-water-energy triad, we open new possibilities for enhancing cellular hydration, energy production, and overall vitality through relatively simple interventions that work with our body's inherent design.

This resonates deeply with me as I've been in a personal war with skin cancer and learning all I can about it since MSM equates the sun with cancer, which simply doesn't set well since our ancestors were constantly in the sun. My close ancestors were river people constantly outdoors fishing, seining minnows or hunting - yet nary a one had skin cancer. I'm also of the vintage where my eyes are developing floaters and all my friends are getting glaucoma and other eye issues. Hence the current quest.....and THANK YOU Sayer for another thought-provoking article! I love the pictures of you and your dad :)

In this article I include what I've used successfully to self-treat these various skin cancers after hearing Dr. Makis state ivermectin paste (also Panacur - Fenben) cures all sorts of skin cancers as well as inflammatory skin conditions (acne, rosacea, eczema, etc).

As an important aside, I must explain I was raised on Country Crock margarine. It's all we ate because it was supposed to be 'healthier.' I find it fascinating that the state I live in now (Wisconsin) actually made margarine illegal from 1895-1967 to protect the dairy industry. WI law still prohibits serving margarine to students, patients, or inmates and restaurants from serving margarine as a substitute for butter, unless specifically requested by the customer. It would be interesting to compare skin cancer rates of WI with other states without this law.

Hope this helps someone out there.....
