Thank-you for this article on pomegranate. My grandfather was a natural healer in Tucson from 1932-1961, and I grew up under that influence, though my father did not follow in his father's footsteps. Today, I lead the Midwest Elderbery Cooperative, which is increasing public access to American elderberry grown by American farmers. I would imagine that there is a strong overlap of health benefits over time with what this study proved with pomegranate when regularly consuming other specialty berries like aronia, black currants and saskatoons. I know of many positive testimonies to that effect, but as you note, it's difficult to attract the funding needed for research.

I’m a huge proponent of elderberry! I worked with an older RN back in 2001 who told me to take elderberry any time I felt an illness coming on and sure enough it worked miracles. It knocked out every virus/cold I treated with it. I raised my kids using it and to this day they still use it. And, I clearly remember my grandma taking elderberry syrup back in the early 60’s. (Elderberry also makes incredible jelly, too!)

Another great story! What most people don't realize is that elderberry, particularly American elderberry with its greater variety of polyphenols than its European sister, is also a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Owain Glyndŵr's avatar

I take a 335mg elderberry capsule every other day as part of my supplement regimen. Haven't had any respiratory illness since at least late 2019.

JudyC's avatar

Yes, it seems particularly effective against respiratory illness, and I would warrant to say, even against Covid. Big claim perhaps but my family never got Covid despite not changing our lifestyle one bit. I think the elderberry plus the other supplements (D, C, zinc, NAC, etc) had a direct impact on our health.

Owain Glyndŵr's avatar

Late 2019 is when we started with elderberry.

Add K2, magnesium and a few others and we have a similar regimen.

Christopher, Just checked out the website for Midwest Elderberry Cooperative. Will be purchasing some freeze dried berries soon. Also hoping to plant some bushes this spring. Unfortunately elderberry has to be cultivated here. Thanks for posting this very helpful resource!

So glad to read this article and the response! I forgot why I was so interested in pomegranates and I've extracted aronia! It's time to incorporate them both again. Thank you!!

Christopher J. Patton's avatar

I have added about 10% American elderberry juice, which tastes much better than the European, to pomegranate juice and found that they blended well. For me, this mix greatly dampened pomegranate's aftertaste. I also believe that they are quite complementary in their nutrients - not having the same nutrient profile. Aronia and elderberry are more similar but also taste very good together. I have stated to work on a 20% elderberry 80% aroniaberry juice for wholesale distribution. Aronia and pomegranate would probably taste good mixed as well.

Thank you Christopher! I look forward to purchasing your berries.

I was about to comment that others berries:

Elder

Hawthorne

Blue

Marion

Etc. must have the same impact on cardiovascular health.

I drink fresh brewed elderberry tea regularly as it was recommended by an ayurvedic practitioner - I also have an Elderberry Elixier from earthley.com

Pomegranate freeze dried powder is delicious and added to yogurt makes a delicious way to take pomegranate.

Natures Way pomegranate extract capsules. Best testing ever and great price

And because cinnamon spirulina elderberry and more are testing for arsenic lead etc i use Natures Way instead. Great cup of ginger tea simply from a capsule!

Dr. Eugene R Cooper's avatar

I purchase Micro Ingredients via Amazon usually.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

thanks for this recommendation! I purchased it this morning and it arrived already. I put some in spring water and drank it just now - delicious!

MOMinator's avatar

Is there a brand/source you recommend?

Dr. Eugene R Cooper's avatar

The label claims 2 scoops is 1cup (8oz) of juice, which is greater than the 3 oz in the study. Adding pistachios to 2 scoops in plain yogurt is a real treat.

Owain Glyndŵr's avatar

How many scoops of the powder would equal the ~50mil or roughly 2oz, with the strength mentioned in the study?

Suzy Cue's avatar

What a great idea!

Dr Monica's avatar

Yes, indeed- I am not surprised, and I knew about pomegranate effect on CV system. Thanks! I BET there are many other plants that can help this way, so imagine the convergence, the synergy when one uses them- garlic, Moringa, Curcuma (turmeric), apples, ginger, etc... My Gr Gr parents lived over 100 y , and they did not have major health problems, had no family doctor, never went for a "check up",....They grew their own food mostly, and worked outdoors as farmers. Way to go.

Suzy Cue's avatar

Dr Monica - does ‘Gr Gr Parents’ translate to great grandparents? Too many abbreviations these days 😚

Dr Monica's avatar

Yes, great grand parents.

That's funny. 3 months on a homemade Electrolyte and I threw away my reading glasses after 15 years of daily use up to 2.0 strength. NO MORE READING GLASSES NEEDED. Eyes are one of our extremeties which too suffer when we age, fail to eat right and don't drink enough water. My recipie is simple, safe and effective. Mix in a jar, the juice from a lemon, lime or key lime or any combination with a Pinch Of Celtic Sea Salt, about 1/8th teaspoon, add 1/4 teaspoon each of Cayanne pepper powder, tumeric powder and ginger powder. fill the rest of the way with water. Put the lid on the jar and shake before each drink. Don't be detoured by the bite of the first drink or the taste. You are drinking the mixture to improve circulation to your extremities. Think, not just eyes but fingers, toes, hair, your nose, etc. All parts of your body get better blood flow as well as heightened senses. It's basically a several hour buzz that is achieved by drinking this Electrolyte. It beats alcohol or drugs and has caused ZERO SIDE EFFECTS. Memory improves. Dryness of fingers and toes subsided. The benefits are many. I have shared the recipie with many others and nobody has ever contacted me to say, "It's doesn't work". Nobody has told me it didn't help them. This drink paired daily with CACAO, not at the same time, of course, has changed my life for the better. Most mornings, I drink one or two cups of CACAO, no more coffee for more than a year. CACAO is a regenerative food. It's RAW Cocoa. I just add about 1 teaspoon of honey to CACAO with very warm water, stir and sip until gone. Dr. William Li on youtube (A food as medicine doctor) recommends CACAO as a Regenerative Food. CACAO is filled with Flavinoids among other things that help to heal us from the inside. Make sure to eat fruit also during the day so you don't get plugged up (constipated). I actually add a bit of Mushroom coffee to my CACAO to help avoid constipation besides eating fruits. I buy the spices in large containers (in bulk) because it's more cost effective than buying spices in tiny jars. Mix drink, enjoy and live better. At 65, I have no GP, no Specialists, no Prescriptions, no real physical limitations. I have also maintained my physical strength so if I want to, I can unload and help put away 1,000 bales of hay in a day or two. I shovel snow in the winter, work daily in a tool & die shop designing abd building whatever customers want or need. I quit fast food, Soda pop, chips, dips, candy limiting my starch and sugar intake. I rarely eat anything processed anymore. I get plenty if exercise. As a result no blue pills either. As a father of 8 grown children and 5 grandkids so far, Life is good. 10 years ago, after several years at a Desk Job in Sales and Tool Design, I weighed 240 pounds. I started walking a mile each morning, really a brisk walk, starting at 13 minutes and getting down to 9 minutes, I lost 40 pounds fast but couldn't get below 200 pounds until I gave up bad eating habits. Once I quit all of the processed junk food, I got down to 165 which I decided was too thin. Today I'm at 195 pounds working on getting to 185 ish so my pants will fit better. Two drinks changed my life, my health and my outlook on aging in general. Give these drinks a try. You'll feel better in time.

Pomegranate is part of my diet, at least as much as I can afford, and as often as the local stores don't run out.

Margot's avatar

Can you tell us what form of pomegranate juice they used in their study? Was it fresh raw juice or bottled? Pomegranate juice that comes bottled is pasteurized so I’m not sure it would work the same way that raw juice would. I used to be able to buy raw pomegranate juice from a health food store in Los Angeles back in the 1980s. I haven’t seen it for years, which wouldn’t necessitate juicing pomegranate in my kitchen, if I could even get pomegranates at this time of year. . Also, I see many suggestions of freeze dried pomegranate powder but would that necessarily leave the factors intact that made the difference in the study?

John The Visionary's avatar

I recently started eating raw pomegranate. It's a little work but worthwhile.

Margot's avatar

Where are you able to get raw pomegranates? I only see them around the holidays in the late fall. The white part is so incredibly bitter. Do you separate the red seeds and juice them completely separately from the skin and white pith or do you simply throw it all in the juicer?

John The Visionary's avatar

Margot, Good evening. Yes. We get fresh Pomegranate at s local food store. I agree about the pulp in Pomegranate which it tough. I only cut them in 4 parts, then each part in half so 8 parts which makes it easier to separate the Cornels from the white pulp. I put a spoonful of Cornells on my mouth, and gently chew the juice and fruit from the seeds, Then I spit the seeds into a cup for disposal. I nibble all the fruit from the seeds because I believe it is beneficial. Not just the juice. It's work so I just have a few spoonfuls per morning or sitting. Blessings to you. John

Margot's avatar

Thank you so much, John! I just swallow the little white seeds. I thought I read somewhere that they’re actually good for you, but I’m not sure about that. Thanks again for your thorough answer. Margot.

John The Visionary's avatar

Margot, People are not designed to digest seeds. A friend of mine was told by his doctor that seed consumption can cause Apendix damage. He ate seeds with every hot pepper. I only eat the fruit.

Andrew C's avatar

Some key questions there Margot. It’s a shame there’s no answer.

Excellent article. I presume the reason that people need 3 ounces to move the needle is that the pomegranate used in the study is 50% more potent than the typical pomegranate juice found in most grocery stores. The 50mL used in the study is less than 2 ounces. It is less than a double shot. 1 ounce of water weighs 28g and pomegranate juice is denser than water.

In 2005-2009, the level of polyphenols would have been considered low according to phenol-explorer.eu. I think the author wisely recommends 3oz (instead of less than 2oz) now to compensate for the loss of nutrients in the soil since then.

Great piece, you have the spirit of Jesus in your work. I literally saw 133 likes and 33 coments before my remarks.

The Lord has been "seeding" the most seed-rich fruit in his garden to many of us invested in naturopathy / holistic wisdom. Pomegranates do a lot for colorectal Issues too. You definitely nailed the key motivations in G-d's garden being immune from patentɛd profits. I pray that you will publish the Covid Audit, which showcases how COVID (marketing term for Coronavirus Biowarfare) PATENTS will now hang them like the fruit of the vine¿
